The prion protein and cholesterol

Prof Nigel Hooper from the University of Manchester outlines research that links cholesterol levels and the prion protein to the toxic signalling of excessive β-amyloid

Presenter: Prof Nigel Hooper, University of Manchester, Camera and Editing: Tim Lee, Producer: Juliet Jopson

Prof Nigel Hooper left the University of Leeds after 32 years in May 2014 to take up the position of Chair of Cell Biology in the Institute of Brain, Behaviour and Mental Health at the University of Manchester. As we didn’t quite catch him before he left, Prof Hooper kindly returned to tell us about this research into prion proteins and cholesterol that was done at Leeds.

Find out more about the prion protein’s role in β-amyloid toxicity and also the protective role of prion proteins.
